Residential Children's Homes

Trauma-Informed Care for Children Affected by Abuse and Neglect

Respite Care of San Antonio’s (RCSA) residential homes are the only licensed residential homes in Texas dedicated to caring for children with special needs and complex medical conditions who are victims of abuse or neglect.

Our Residential Children’s Homes operate 24/7, every day of the year, providing essential protection and immediate needs — shelter, food, clothing, transportation, and care — to children facing crises after being removed from unsafe home environments.

Unlike typical residential homes, our program specializes in caring for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as complex medical conditions.

This vulnerable group requires additional resources to address the effects of medical neglect and inadequate care.

The Davidson Respite House, opened in 1997 with support from the Davidson Family and the local community, provides residential home services for abused & neglected children with special needs. In 2010, the program expanded with the donation of the Najim Family Respite House.

Program Impact

RCSA’s Residential Children’s Homes support the health and development of children with disabilities and complex medical conditions who have been removed from their homes due to abuse and neglect.

In the short term, RCSA improves access to medical and specialty care, stabilizes untreated conditions, and ensures consistent medical management. Long term, children achieve their developmental potential and improved well-being.

Through a comprehensive care model, RCSA helps children heal from Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), supporting their physical health, emotional stability, and overall growth.

Compassionate Care

Program caregivers provide children with compassionate care, structure, behavioral and life skills training, and coaching. They undergo 30 hours of pre-service training and receive 50+ hours of annual training covering topics like:

  • Trauma-informed care for addressing adverse childhood experiences

  • Social isolation awareness

  • Fostering self-esteem

Children participate in family-style dining, playground activities, enriching experiences, and field trips.

Staff enroll school-age children in San Antonio schools, assist with assignments, promote academic progress, and support them in reaching their full potential.

Mental health support is available onsite by talented professionals who implement RCSA’s treatment model.
